Pizzeria San Remo – bella italia in the middle of Kiel
Something nobody should be missing in their restaurant repertoire is a good and solid Italian! Therefore we took a good look on the Pizzeria San Remo that opened in 1974 at Dreiecksplatz in Kiel.
Wooden tables, rattan chairs and italian music – when visiting San Remo you get a feeling as if you were sitting in Italy itself. Everything inside the pizzeria has a special Mediterranean Flair. The music is a little louder than we are used to but not too loud. What we notice is that they are playing exclusively Italian music, which is much nicer than listening to the same old pop songs on the radio. What else is noticable: There is not much space between the places, especially the tables for two. For some people this might not be relevant but for others it’s disturbing to have to listen to the newest stories of the people sitting next to you while you just want to eat your pizza in peace.
However we have to say that the location of the San Remo is unbeatable. The Dreiecksplatz is easy to reach with public transport, on foot and with the car.
In San Remo we are lucky to have a very kind and polite waiter who takes our orders in perfect German. Special orders aren’t a problem at all and the waiter asks the cook what is possible. Since the pizzeria doesn’t have a special vegan menu or vegan dishes, there are quite a few special offers we make.
We get more than enough time to choose from the menu and during our whole stay the waiter asks us more than a few times if everything is alright. A definite plus for the restaurant!
3. The drinks
The Pizzeria San Remo offers every standard drink from coke and sprite to water and hot drinks such as coffee or tea. You can also get fresh juice, beer on tap and other alcoholic beverages. And for everyone who’d like a glass of wine to go with the Italian dinner, there is a wide range of white wines, rosé wines and red wines in high quality. Or maybe you’d like a wine spritzer?
4. The food
As mentioned before, there is no explicit vegan dish on the menu. Therefore Esther has to make some special orders: for starter she gets a Minestrone soup without pasta. As a main dish she orders “Pasta Giardiniera” with tomato sauce without cream. Unfortunately dessert has to be cancelled as it is not possible as a vegan variation.
Stefan orders “Bruschetta Mix della casa” for starter, “Mix di Carne” as main dish and a homemade italian Tiramisu for dessert.
The salami is combined with a Gorgonzola cheese sauce and the Parma ham with lard, which give them a very intense taste. The amount is more than enough for the money you pay.
The main dish, a “Mix di Carne” which is a mix of different meats, consists of a Beef steak, a turkey steak and pork tenderloin in combination with Mediterranean vegetables, potatos and sauce. The roasted vegetables are a bit too soft for my taste but okay. The pork tenderloin is slightly dry, whereas the other meat tastes perfect. All in all, a tasty dish with little to complain about. After the main dish I am as full as possible but there’s always room for something sweet, right? Therefore I get a homemade Italian Tiramisu which consists of stacks of biscuits and a creme of mascarpone, egg yolk and beaten egg white.
There must be some secret to the Italian stomach, since the portion is gigantic as well. The top of the Tiramisu is slightly sunken as you can see in the picture, but it’s not a big deal because the dessert tastes amazing. It has a “fluffy” consistency and tastes creamy and sweet, but not too sweet.
My Minestrone soup without noodles is a fresh vegetable soup with soft cooked vegetables. The soup tastes good but the size is just too big for me, so Stefan has to help me.My main dish is called “Pasta Giardiniera” and sounds more adventurous as it tastes. I ordered the pasta with a simple tomato sauce instead of a tomato-cream-sauce – you know, because of the cream. The taste of the dish is not bad and the pink pepper adds a nice flavour to it.
What I really like about this dish is that the pasta in every dish is made without egg, which basically means that they are all vegan. In combination with zucchini and paprika the dish makes a solid classic, although it doesn’t swipe me off my feet. However there are some more alternatives to try out that I will definitely order next time. Those include various salads of pizza without cheese.
Apart from the regular menu San Remo has some special qualities to offer which is absolutely unique in Kiel. Every tuesday you can try the pizza roulette and every wednesday there is a special pasta roulette. There you pay one price and can try out every dish on the menu. Every round there is another offer. But you don’t have to eat everything, just what you’d like to try. On sundays there is a special brunch offer and on thursdays you can order a “pizza gigante”, every pizza on the menu you like in supersize – but for the regular price.
At San Remo you can enjoy another special: the first pizza to go! San Remo was the first restaurant in Kiel that offered Pizza as a small and handy size that you could take with you. And they still do.
If there are any leftovers you can have them wrapped to take them home with you. You can pay with cash or credit card.
There’s no question that San Remo is diverse and there is a dish for almost everyone. But for people who want a fast meal it is probably not the right place as you have to bring some time to the pizzeria.
Additionally, it might get a little boring for vegans, though it is definitely possible to get a vegan dish such as pasta, salad or pizza without cheese. Truth said, San Remo is primarily recommended for meateaters – they will definitely enjoy this Italian restaurant!
